Wildfires have been sweeping across Spain and France, leading to the evacuation of over 250,000 people. One significant blaze has threatened France’s Bordeaux wine region, prompting Spain to declare a national emergency.
France’s Response
In France, the military has been deployed, and changes have been made to the Tour de France as firefighters work to control the blazes. A massive wildfire in southwest France has caused more than a quarter-million people to evacuate, particularly impacting areas near Bordeaux.
French authorities issued evacuation orders for an additional 55,000 residents overnight from areas south of Bordeaux. This has increased the total number of evacuees in that region to around 250,000. The fires have been fueled by gusty winds, dry conditions, and repeated heatwaves.
“The fire again became extremely virulent…generating its own winds and advancing erratically toward the Bordeaux metropolitan area,” noted Interior Minister Laurent Nunez.
The blaze has burned approximately 42,000 hectares, equivalent to about 162 square miles, in the Gironde region; this is nearly four times the size of Paris. Mayor Thomas Cazenave stated that the flames came within nine miles of Bordeaux, causing the partial closure of a major regional highway.
Efforts to Contain the Fires
Over 2,500 firefighters, supported by 18 planes and helicopters, are striving to reduce the fire’s expansion. France has also sent 1,500 soldiers to create firebreaks and remove vegetation. Various European nations have contributed aircraft and firefighting crews.
Additionally, 450 volunteers have joined the firefighting efforts, including locals like 65-year-old farmer Pascal Roudier, who expressed his commitment to assisting others during this crisis.
Situation in Spain
Meanwhile, Spain faces its own challenges with wildfires. About 116,000 people have been evacuated in the Valencia region and areas west of Madrid. Tragically, one person died in a Valencia suburb fire, marking the nation’s latest wildfire fatality. Earlier this month, another 13 people lost their lives in southern Spain due to wildfires.
