GENEVA — European nations announced a boycott of the World Cup and other FIFA events in response to Gianni Infantino’s proposal to involve private equity in soccer. On the same day, North American soccer representatives also dismissed his proposal.
European and North American Opposition
UEFA held an urgent online meeting with its 55 member nations, deciding not to participate in FIFA competitions. The upcoming FIFA tournament is the Women’s Under-20 World Cup in Poland, starting September 5. The UK’s federations are also bidding to host the 2035 Women’s World Cup, with a decision expected by November 23.
UEFA emphasized the importance of keeping the World Cup purely about football, stating, “Some things are too important to sell.” Infantino’s plan promised $20 million to each of FIFA’s 211 members with a mid-September deadline to accept. Later that day, the CONCACAF also rejected Infantino’s proposal, citing concerns over lack of process and unnecessary external investment.
FIFA’s Controversial Proposal
Infantino’s plan aimed to spin off commercial activities into a $20 billion subsidiary named FIFA Forward Enterprise, 20% owned by private investors. The plan included potential funding increases for FIFA members through 2038, but UEFA labeled it a failure of leadership.
UEFA fears private investors gaining stakes in FIFA competitions, stating, “The moment external investors acquire ownership interests in FIFA competitions, football changes forever.” The organization is concerned about the shift in focus to commercial returns and constant investor pressure.
FIFA’s Response and Future Implications
Infantino depicted the equity offer as an opportunity for funding global soccer development. FIFA proposed adding more teams and competitions, potentially holding these more frequently than every four years. Such changes could disrupt existing formats and schedules set by continental soccer bodies, affecting tournaments like World Cup qualifiers and Champions Leagues.
UEFA confirmed no participation in FIFA events until these proposals are fully withdrawn. The Asian Football Confederation also expressed concern over the potential impact on regional competitions.
Infantino had previously faced challenges, such as the 2021 boycott threat that derailed plans for biyearly World Cups. Although he previously appeared secure in his presidency, dissatisfaction with his proposals may affect future re-elections.
