Brewers Achieve Historic 22-0 Shutout Against Mariners

The Milwaukee Brewers achieved a historic 22-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night, equaling baseball’s modern-era record for the largest shutout. The performance was highlighted by three-run homers from Christian Yelich, David Hamilton, and Luis Lara, along with a two-run homer by Jake Bauers.

The Brewers, holding the best record in the major leagues at 78-48, matched a franchise high for the most runs scored in a single game. Prior to this, the only teams with 22-0 wins since 1901 were Pittsburgh against the Chicago Cubs on September 16, 1975, and Cleveland versus the New York Yankees on August 31, 2004.

Bauers made a memorable impression by scoring the Brewers’ first run. In the first inning, he doubled with two outs against Bryce Miller (4-7). Following this, William Contreras singled, and a throw from left fielder Randy Arozarena to home plate initially seemed to have Bauers out. Nonetheless, Bauers managed to disrupt catcher Cal Raleigh’s mitt with a slap during his slide, causing Raleigh to drop the ball. Bauers then promptly dove back to the plate.

A homer from Yelich increased the Brewers’ lead to 6-0 in the fifth inning. Hamilton’s homer in the sixth pushed the score to 9-0, and Bauers’ 22nd homer later in that inning extended it to 11-0. Milwaukee capitalized on their momentum by scoring nine times in the eighth inning, facing Mariners infielder Leo Rivas. Notably, Lara’s homer was the first of his career.

Kyle Harrison (10-3) pitched effectively for the Brewers, giving up only two hits in five innings after allowing eight runs (three earned) in his previous start. Pitchers Shane Drohan, Grant Anderson, and catcher Gary Sánchez completed the game, with Sánchez notably throwing several pitches under 40 mph while working around two hits in the ninth.

Hamilton recorded four RBIs, a personal best in his career. Yelich and Lara each drove in four runs as well, and Garrett Mitchell contributed with four hits.

Upcoming Game

On Wednesday, Seattle’s RHP Logan Gilbert, with a 9-7 record and a 3.28 ERA, will face Milwaukee’s RHP Dustin May, who holds a 6-7 record with a 4.13 ERA.
