Ukrainian anti-ship missiles and drones launched a significant attack on a Russian naval base along the Black Sea coast. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the operation as a unique nighttime strike. Drones developed by Kyiv since Russia’s full-scale invasion began over four years ago have persistently targeted Russian vessels in the Black Sea, including warships and oil tankers.

Ukraine’s use of air and sea drones has effectively restricted the movements of Russia’s Black Sea fleet, according to Ukrainian officials. This achievement stands as one of the major accomplishments in the ongoing conflict.

Ukrainian authorities believe Russian President Vladimir Putin continues his commitment to the war, despite slow and costly advances by his forces and ongoing U.S. diplomatic efforts for a resolution. Zelenskyy revealed plans for Russia’s potential mobilization of hundreds of thousands by year-end, based on Ukrainian intelligence reports. Reports indicate Russia is increasing production of ballistic missiles and jet-powered drones, challenging Ukrainian defense systems.

Ukraine also aims to enhance its weapons production through international collaboration. While rumors suggest no imminent Russian mobilization, Russian lawmaker Andrei Gurulyov dismissed such claims as misinformation spread by Ukraine to destabilize Russia internally.

Following the controversial mobilization of 300,000 men several years ago, Russia relies more on volunteers attracted by relatively high pay. However, the decree allowing the 2022 mobilization remains open-ended, enabling its resumption if required.

Planned Strikes on Black Sea Infrastructure

The Ukrainian military reported successfully targeting the naval base in Novorossiysk, the primary stronghold of Russia’s Black Sea fleet. The attack affected air defenses, piers, and other port infrastructure, as per Zelenskyy.

Post previous Ukrainian attacks on Sevastopol in Crimea, Russia moved most naval ships to Novorossiysk. Ukrainian drones attacked multiple locations overnight, as reported by Governor Veniamin Kondratyev.

“An eight-year-old was among three fatalities, with 24 others injured,” Kondratyev stated.

The strikes also damaged residential structures and halted one of Novorossiysk’s grain terminals. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed its air defenses shot down over 500 Ukrainian drones.

Impact on Key Oil Hub

Located in Novorossiysk, the Grushovaya oil terminal serves as a pivotal oil hub. Though not confirmed as hit, disruptions could affect global energy markets. Earlier, U.S. interests expressed concerns about Ukraine’s attacks impacting oil business in Kazakhstan.

The Caspian Pipeline Consortium links Caspian oil fields to Novorossiysk, integral for Kazakhstan’s crude exports, including those involving major U.S. companies Chevron and ExxonMobil.

Following Western countries intercepting Russian oil tankers, Russian President Putin retaliated by labeling these actions as piracy, promising to respond similarly.

Russian air defenses claimed to down numerous drones over Sevastopol, damaging apartments and houses in Crimea.

Meanwhile, in Ukraine, Russian drone attacks in the Kherson region resulted in two fatalities and two injuries, officials reported. Zaporizhzhia suffered a shopping mall’s destruction.

Drones further struck Odesa’s port infrastructure, hitting fuel reservoirs and military cargo processing sites. Russian strikes allegedly targeted vessels carrying military supplies for Ukraine.
