A burger stand in Blackpool, England, has maintained an impressively low price for its signature burger amid rising food and energy costs. Chris Higgitt, the owner of Higgitt’s Las Vegas Arcade Blackpool & £1 Burger Bar, has kept the price of the burger at £1, approximately $1.34, since 2006.
The burger is a simple combination of a bun, an English beef patty, onions, and sauce. This low price has made the burger a standout attraction in the popular seaside resort town, drawing long lines during tourist season.
“I am very proud of being able to keep the price for this long,” said Higgitt.
Before launching his burger venture, Higgitt worked in processing and quality engineering. Later, he and his wife, Karen, ran a bed-and-breakfast before acquiring an arcade in 2006. They struggled with the arcade’s performance until they came up with the idea of a burger bar.
From this spur-of-the-moment decision, Higgitt calculated that selling each burger for £1 was feasible. What started as a supplementary business grew to become the primary income source for the couple, with the burger operation now contributing about 90% of their revenue. The business operates seven days a week from March to November.
Higgitt attributes his ability to maintain low prices to operational efficiency, bulk purchasing, and leveraging social media. He estimates the cost to make each burger, including ingredients and electricity, is roughly 50 pence or around 68 cents.
The business benefits from regular social media exposure, with TikTok and YouTube creators frequently showcasing the affordable burger, attracting curious customers.
“I am always welcoming to food YouTubers or TikTokers who come along and record themselves trying the burger,” Higgitt said.
Beyond burgers, Higgitt’s menu includes hot dogs, Spam sandwiches, and sausage sandwiches.
