Enes Kanter Freedom Challenges WNBA Eligibility

Enes Kanter Freedom declared his intention to play in the WNBA, sparking controversy earlier this month. His move came as a response to Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham’s stance against transgender women competing with females.

Freedom feels the WNBA lacks clarity on its gender policy. He believes their openness to trans athletes warrants the league’s response. Freedom voiced these thoughts on Fox News Channel’s “My View with Lara Trump”, expressing confidence in becoming the best draft pick in WNBA history.

Freedom highlighted Golden State Valkyries star Gabby Williams’ support for trans athletes and Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve’s advocacy for trans kids as influential. He noted other sports have addressed such eligibility, referencing terms like ‘biological female’, while the WNBA has not.

“Think about how much money I can bring, think about all the endorsement deals,” he said.

Freedom feels the WNBA is unprepared for the challenges of defining gender eligibility. League discussions continue on trans athletes’ participation, amid media scrutiny and allegations of divisiveness.

Sophie Cunningham voiced her concerns with ESPN about maintaining fairness in women’s sports, saying, “I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that.’” She insists her motives are to protect young athletes.

Kanter described Cunningham as an “American hero,” highlighting her courage and the support she receives. Her stance has inspired global support, with rallies held before WNBA games, including one before the Fever’s game against New York Liberty.

Ryan Gaydos, a senior editor for Fox News Digital, reported on the topic, offering ongoing coverage through the network’s platforms.
