Eddie Howe to Leave Newcastle United

Eddie Howe plans to step down from his role as Newcastle United head coach. Matthias Jaissle, currently with Al Ahli, is expected to replace him.

Jaissle, 38, has a strong record with Al Ahli, winning the Asian Champions League twice. Both Al Ahli and Newcastle share a majority ownership by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF).

The German, a former Hoffenheim player, gained recognition as head coach at Red Bull Salzburg, where he clinched consecutive Austrian Bundesliga titles and the Austrian Cup.

Since joining Al Ahli in 2023, Jaissle has adopted a high-intensity, attacking strategy, leading to two Asian Champions League titles in 2025 and 2026.

Howe’s Tenure and Achievements

Howe took charge of Newcastle in November 2021, succeeding Steve Bruce when the team was 19th in the Premier League shortly after the PIF-led consortium’s takeover.

He led them to top-flight safety, then achieved Champions League qualification with a fourth-place league finish in 2022-23. Newcastle also won the Carabao Cup, their first major domestic trophy since 1955.

Despite a strong start, Newcastle’s performance declined last season, with a 12th-place Premier League finish and an early Champions League exit.

Howe remained following discussions with the club’s leadership and a PIF delegation. They acknowledged the underperformance and emphasized the need for improvement.

Who is Matthias Jaissle?

Encouraged by Ralf Rangnick, who saw potential in him as a coach, Jaissle trained within RB Leipzig’s youth department.

By 2019, he became Salzburg’s under-18 head coach, eventually rising to head coach. He emphasizes high-pressure play and swift attacks, influenced by Rangnick’s philosophy.
