Elon Musk’s super PAC, America PAC, revealed spending over $800,000 in August to support Republican Senate and House candidates in competitive races. The focus was primarily in Texas and Maine, where Republicans aim to defend Senate seats.
America PAC’s August expenditures likely mark the beginning of extensive campaign spending efforts by Musk, the world’s richest person. Previously, he contributed hundreds of millions of dollars to support President Trump and other Republican candidates during the 2024 elections. According to The New York Times, Musk authorized his super PAC to allocate over $100 million for Republican causes in November.
The disclosed spending for August targeted expected competitive Senate races: Texas ($247,595), Maine ($170,224.29), Ohio ($105,675), New Hampshire ($91,458.50), Iowa ($54,600), Michigan ($25,605), and Alaska ($17,235).
Republican candidates in competitive House districts also benefited from America PAC’s contributions, including those in Virginia, New York, Pennsylvania, Florida, and Wisconsin.
House Speaker Mike Johnson met with Musk during a campaign tour in Texas. The state is witnessing several contentious House battles and a significant Senate contest between Republican Ken Paxton and Democrat James Talarico. Johnson did not confirm whether he and Musk discussed campaign spending strategies. He stated, “He’s made public a lot of what he’s doing. I’m going to talk about our conversation on that point, but we’re gonna win the midterms.”
The spending report categorized the August expenses for “PRINTING,” indicating usage for mail advertisements. Chris Young, a GOP operative and former Department of Government Efficiency employee under Musk, signed off on the spending. Musk appointed Young in 2024 to manage America PAC’s operations and financial allocations.
America PAC additionally spent over $207,000 on digital ads in Texas, Michigan, New Hampshire, and Maine, reports AdImpact and Facebook ad library records. These ads generally reminded voters to participate in elections. One advertisement stated, “You couldn’t vote in his election, and socialism declared victory over America’s biggest city. If you don’t vote in November, socialism could declare victory over America.”
In the 2024 election cycle, America PAC distributed over $239 million in support of Republican candidates. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, was the largest contributor for either party, as per Federal Election Commission records.
Asked in an interview last year about future political spending intentions, Musk expressed plans to reduce future contributions, saying, “I think in terms of political spending, I’m going to do a lot less in the future. I think I’ve done enough.”
