Eagles’ Missed Opportunity: Bears Secure Victory

On September 29, 2026, the Philadelphia Eagles faced a setback against the Chicago Bears. Trailing 20-7 with 3:30 left in the third quarter, head coach Nick Sirianni made a pivotal decision. Positioned at Chicago’s 49-yard line, he chose a delay of game penalty to punt rather than attempting a one-yard fourth-down conversion.

Had the Eagles converted, they might have trimmed the Bears’ lead, gaining momentum. However, Philadelphia’s defense managed a three-and-out against the Bears on their subsequent possession. Despite this, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, under intense pressure, threw an interception on a critical 4th and 5 play from the Chicago 46-yard line with 27 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Chicago capitalized on this mistake. They controlled the ball for over eight minutes on an eight-play, 40-yard drive. This possession concluded with a touchdown by backup quarterback Case Keenum, securing a final score of 27-7.

As I look back at that, I probably should have went for it there. Didn’t like that decision… I like the decision to go for it on the fourth and five. Hindsight, I feel like I should have went for it on the fourth and one and a half.

These words, spoken by Sirianni in a postgame news conference, reflect his regret over the decision to punt. Although gaining one yard would have been challenging, it was less daunting than the five yards Hurts faced in a later play. The Eagles struggled throughout the game, losing the turnover battle 3-0. They were outgained in total yards, 375 to 248, by a Bears team led by third-string quarterback Keenum.

This defeat served as a wake-up call for the Eagles, who previously eked out victories against the Washington Commanders and Tennessee Titans. Their performance thus far has not matched their potential.

The Eagles will face the Los Angeles Rams in Week 4. For further coverage of the Eagles and the NFL, visit Newsweek Sports.
