Deshaun Watson’s performance during the preseason game against the Buffalo Bills resulted in a 31-7 defeat. Watson completed only 5 of 12 passes, gaining 36 yards and throwing an interception. His play was reminiscent of several regular-season games, as he exited the field to boos from fans.
Watson addressed the crowd’s reaction, stating his disappointment with the fans’ behavior. He recalled the time when fans celebrated his Achilles injury, which sidelined him for half of the 2024 season and all of 2025 after re-injury. Watson expressed his feelings in an interview with reporters.
“The whole world knows it has nothing to do about the performance. It’s a little bit more personal than that. So I think it’s a disrespectful thing. So yeah, I mean, I’m going to keep whatever I feel with me and my family internally on how I feel about that. And yeah, just move on.”
While Watson criticized the fanbase, head coach Todd Monken attempted to provide context for Watson’s remarks. Monken described Watson’s comments as a form of emotional release after a difficult game.
“He emptied his heart a little bit, and I don’t think that says who he is,” Monken explained. “I see the competitor in him. I see the everyday work he puts in, and he wants to be back. He wants to get back to where he was as best he can.”
Monken assured that Watson’s statements would not impact the decision on Cleveland’s starting quarterback. Though Watson struggled in the game, Shedeur Sanders delivered a strong performance, completing 9 of 11 passes for 74 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.
Cleveland’s quarterback selection for Week 1 against Jacksonville Jaguars remains undecided, as Monken has yet to reveal a preference between Watson and Sanders.
