Thrilling Moments at Wrigley Field
A memorable scene unfolded at Wrigley Field as Hippo Campus, a local rock band, finished its rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” during the seventh-inning stretch. The speakers then played another familiar tune, “Bear Down, Chicago Bears.” Shortly after, the video board displayed a group of Chicago athletes and influencers.
Among them were Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, Bulls forwards Caleb Wilson and Matas Buzelis, along with Cole Bennett, founder of Lyrical Lemonade. Seated in the front row behind the home dugout, the quartet donned Cubs jerseys and sparked enthusiasm among the 39,018 attendees. Williams, in a Pete Crow-Armstrong jersey, led a chant for the Cubs center fielder, “PCA, PCA.”
“Awesome having them here,” Crow-Armstrong remarked. “I felt the energy from the crowd when they got put on the board. Chicago’s got a lot to look forward to with those three.”
Crow-Armstrong’s Stellar Performance
Pete Crow-Armstrong contributed significantly to the team’s excitement, reinforcing his NL MVP chances with a decisive two-run homer, marking his 39th of the season. His efforts were crucial in the Cubs’ 2-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers, securing a split in the series.
The win also provided momentum for the team. Manager Craig Counsell noted the significance of Crow-Armstrong’s relationship with the athletes present, emphasizing the support among Chicago’s sports community.
Outstanding Pitching by Kevin Gausman
Kevin Gausman’s pitching performance was pivotal, delivering seven innings of one-run baseball and earning nine strikeouts. Gausman relied on his fastball-splitter combination, throwing 103 pitches with precision.
Crow-Armstrong praised Gausman, recognizing his intelligence and synergy with catcher Carson Kelly. “Smart guy, and it looked like him and Carson were working well together tonight. Gaus was absolutely dominant.”
Challenges Faced by the Cubs
Cubs faced recent setbacks, with left-hander Matthew Boyd exiting a game with surrendering leads, and David Peterson struggling in another matchup. However, Gausman’s solid outing reduced reliance on the bullpen early and allowed relievers Ryan Zeferjahn and Ryan Rolison to shine with perfect innings.
“We need some good outings from our bullpen,” Counsell explained. “They were both excellent today.”
Injury Concerns
Injury updates revealed right-hander Ben Brown would miss the remainder of the season due to a stress reaction in his neck. Cubs plan for Brown’s recovery with hopes for his return in the next season.
Additionally, pitchers Edward Cabrera and Shelby Miller are expected to pitch for Triple-A Iowa. Counsell noted their progress as being closest to returning to action.
Cross-Team Friendship and Support
Despite pitching concerns, Crow-Armstrong has continued to charm fans and colleagues alike. His connection with other Chicago athletes underscores a collective spirit.
“The friendship alone is great, and I’m lucky to have that,” Crow-Armstrong shared. “Showing the city that we’re all pulling for each other is huge.”
