Debra Messing Backs Republican Bruce Blakeman for New York Governor

Debra Messing recently explained her support for Republican Bruce Blakeman in the New York governor’s race, despite her lifelong Democratic alignment. The actress, known for her role in “Will & Grace,” shared her views in a detailed Instagram post. She emphasized her concerns about the quality of life in New York City as a significant factor in her decision.

Messing, 58, stated her commitment to principles she has long championed, such as voting rights, the gay community, and gun control. However, she expressed growing worries about the condition of New York, a place she deeply loves.

“I still stand by every one of those principles,” Messing said. “What has changed is how I feel about the city and state I love dearly.”

Previously, Messing supported Democratic figures like President Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, and Cynthia Nixon. Now, she endorses Bruce Blakeman, a Republican and current Nassau County executive. Despite often criticizing President Donald Trump, whose backing Blakeman has received, Messing cites economic concerns as a reason for her shift.

She acknowledged her financial security, recognizing that many vital contributors to New York’s character, such as small business owners, teachers, and young professionals, struggle with the cost of living. Messing highlighted challenges like congestion pricing, which she believes exacerbates affordability issues.

“When the people who live in the city can’t afford to live there, we risk losing part of what has long made New York an extraordinary place of opportunity,” she wrote.

Messing also expressed anxiety regarding public safety, mentioning her fear of violence on streets and subways. Reflecting on her previous support for New York Governor Kathy Hochul four years ago, Messing indicated she hasn’t seen improvements in her quality of life.

She posed a question to voters, urging them to consider who will improve life for loved ones and communities, rather than voting strictly along party lines. For Messing, Blakeman’s emphasis on affordability and safety made him an appealing candidate.

Although she doesn’t agree with Blakeman on every issue, Messing cited his pro-choice stance and support for gay rights as factors in her decision. She clarified that Trump’s endorsement did not influence her vote.

“No candidate is perfect. But on the issues that are hurting New Yorkers right now, I believe he’s the right choice,” she remarked.

Messing concluded by sharing that her vote reflects personal conscience and priorities, asserting that party affiliation should not dictate her choices.
