Behar commented that Democratic socialism represents democracy and affordability. She stated, “They have bastardized the word. It is a sign of a sinking ship. The Republicans are failing, and they know it, so they resort to tactics like labeling Democrats as communists.”

Haines highlighted economic challenges facing young generations. “Millennials are the first generation not to be better off than their parents,” she noted. With home prices increasing by 115% from 2005 to 2025 and AI threatening jobs, she understands the appeal of socialism for young people. However, she emphasized the importance of researching candidates thoroughly, cautioning that some Democratic Socialists of America members advocate for significant changes like reducing or eliminating law enforcement, borders, and prisons. “It doesn’t seem like anything can come but anarchy from that,” she warned.
Haines’ comments followed an alleged outburst from a Mamdani aide towards ABC executives after she labeled a Mamdani-supported socialist candidate as antisemitic.
Tensions with New York Mayor’s Team
Mamdani sought to influence the political discussion by pitching socialist candidates to “The View”; the show reportedly declined. Last month, three Mamdani-endorsed candidates won New York congressional primaries against establishment Democrats. During a June 24 episode, co-hosts Alyssa Farah Griffin and Haines critiqued some Mamdani-backed candidates. Haines accused candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier of being at an anti-Israel rally following a terrorist attack by Hamas, calling her antisemitic.
Following these assertions, reports suggest a Mamdani aide criticized ABC executives and hinted that Haines’ comments might impact future appearances by the mayor or his candidates on the show.
