Record-breaking heat waves have taken a significant toll in the United States and Europe, leading to multiple fatalities and creating numerous challenges. In the U.S., at least 25 deaths have been linked to the ongoing heat wave as storms bring flooding and high wind threats to the East Coast. On July Fourth, record-high temperatures were reported in mid-Atlantic cities like Washington and Baltimore.

Much of the U.S. is experiencing temperatures ranging from 90 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. These temperatures are expected to shift south and west by early next week. The extreme heat has caused event cancellations and travel delays as the nation commemorated its 250th birthday. A high-pressure heat dome has trapped heat and humidity across regions from the Midwest to the East Coast, challenging many to find relief from the oppressive conditions.

Nearly half of the U.S. population is currently under heat alerts as more than 160 million people brace for hazardous conditions. Various organizations, including summer camps and local officials, are actively working to safeguard children and the elderly.

In addition to the heat, ocean surface temperatures have hit record highs, raising concerns among scientists about a global crisis. One expert emphasized that the planet is warming due to the emission of large amounts of greenhouse gases, mainly from burning fossil fuels.

The sustained heat waves have also affected France, where the public health agency reported an additional 1,000 deaths during the recent heat wave, which surpassed previous records.
