Travelers on California’s scenic Highway 101 need to plan their trips carefully this summer due to the closure of rest areas in both directions of the highway. The Gaviota Roadside Rest Areas in Santa Barbara County shut down on July 1 and are expected to remain closed until October 1, as reported by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).

Closure Details

This closure affects both the northbound and southbound directions of Highway 101 near the Gaviota Tunnel. This section, a busy route between Buellton and Goleta, now lacks state-operated roadside restroom facilities for approximately 35 miles, according to Edhat, a California publication.

Reason for Closure

The closure results from a water shortage, as Caltrans indicated that the facilities require more water to operate fully. The rest areas serve a crucial coastal corridor used by commuters, tourists, and long-distance travelers moving between Southern and Central California.

Planning Ahead

Caltrans encourages travelers to locate alternative stops for fuel, food, and restroom breaks before starting their journey. The rest areas will stay closed until a reliable water supply is restored, with no reopening anticipated before October 1.

The facilities rely on water from an inland spring, which is out of Caltrans’ control. This issue caused similar summer closures last year, according to local reports.

Additional Closures

The Gaviota shutdown coincides with other temporary rest area closures throughout California. In Kern County, Caltrans also closed the Interstate 5 Tejon Pass rest areas for northbound and southbound travel to upgrade water and wastewater facilities. This project will continue until August 2027.
