Wisconsin Democrats have selected Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley as their gubernatorial candidate, edging out state Rep. Francesca Hong. This decision represents a preference for a more moderate figure in a key swing state and reflects the Democratic Party’s resistance to socialism’s influence.
Despite leading in polls, Hong, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, was defeated after prominent Democrats, including retiring Gov. Tony Evers, endorsed Crowley, labeling him as “the future of the party.” Crowley will contend against Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany, who has received backing from former President Donald Trump, in a closely watched November election.
Questions persist about Crowley’s moderation as he moves toward the general election. He emphasized unity at a Wisconsin Democrats unity breakfast alongside Hong and other party members. “We may not agree on everything, but it doesn’t mean that we can’t come to the negotiating table,” Crowley stated.
Crowley labeled Evers as his “secret weapon” following his victory. Evers expressed pride in Crowley, declaring, “He’s the future of our Party.”
Facing Tiffany, Crowley predicted a “stark contrast” with his campaign focusing on progressive values over what he described as “MAGA extremists.” Before his role as Milwaukee County executive, Crowley served in the Wisconsin State Assembly. His campaign highlights his working-class background, touching on personal struggles within his family.
Crowley initially withdrew from the race in July over uncertainties. Yet, he re-entered following what he described as a sign from his wife. She reportedly saw a red cardinal, interpreted as a divine sign, before learning of Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez’s withdrawal.
His platform covers affordable housing, universal childhood education, healthcare expansion, clean energy, voting rights, and grid cost policies for large users. Crowley also opposes collaborations with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Democrats, including Evers, cautioned that a Hong win could jeopardize their control and offer Republicans a chance to flip the governor’s office. Evers predicted Hong wouldn’t win, which became reality.
Democratic Governors Association Chair Andy Beshear congratulated Crowley, noting his commitment to working families and economic growth. Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Devin Remiker highlighted Crowley’s preparedness to challenge Tiffany. Remiker said, “Unlike Trump’s nominee, Crowley is ready to win.”
Crowley’s campaign manager, Garren Randolph, criticized Trump and Tiffany for division and extremism. He reiterated Crowley’s commitment to coalition-building and problem-solving leadership.
