Collins Faces Tight Race Amid Allegations and Close Polls

Senator Susan Collins, a Republican, faces criticism from Democratic challenger Troy Jackson. ProPublica reported alleged interactions between Collins and a major campaign donor. This comes as polls show a tight race in Maine ahead of the 2026 midterms.

FBI Probe into Collins’ Campaign

ProPublica’s investigation revealed the FBI wanted to probe Collins’ dealings with a donor. The effort was dropped when President Donald Trump returned to office. The report has emerged during one of the most competitive Senate races of 2026.

Jackson accused Collins of corruption, stating she prioritized donors over public interest. He demanded transparency regarding her dealings.

Susan Collins doesn’t care that we’re losing our health care, that ICE is killing people on the streets, and that we’ve been dragged into a pointless war—as long as her donors get their contracts and her coffers get filled. We deserve answers about every contract and every conversation that Collins and her team facilitated on the backs of taxpayers.

Collins’ office denied the report’s claims. Her deputy chief of staff, Annie Clark, stated that the allegations were false and highlighted that the campaign was not the FBI’s investigation target.

History and Political Climate

Maine often leans Democratic. However, Collins has been a significant Republican figure in the state due to her bipartisan appeal. Democrats hope to unseat her amid a national environment favoring them, with Trump’s low approval ratings and economic concerns.

Jackson portrays Collins as too close to Trump in a state where Trump is unpopular. Dr. Dan Shea, a political science professor, noted that the report could harm Collins’ reelection chances, especially among voters who appreciate her for bringing federal funds to Maine.

ProPublica Report Details

The report centers on Collins’ interactions with Martin Kao of Navatek, a military contractor. Allegations include solicitation of $500,000 through her super PAC and promises of federal funding.

Kao was indicted for illegal contributions in 2022 and claimed Collins and others were involved. Despite requesting a bribery probe, the FBI rejected implicating Collins, stating no charges were made against her.

Collins’ Response

Clark responded by criticizing ProPublica for relying on Kao, who has credibility issues due to his legal troubles. She mentioned that Collins’ team had cooperated with the FBI, who had concluded their investigations by 2021.

Polls and Election Dynamics

Polls indicate a close race between Collins and Jackson. A Quantus Insights survey shows Collins with 47.1% and Jackson with 46.4%. Both candidates are statistically tied, according to other polls conducted by YouGov, CNN, and Fox News.

Shea described the contest as an “absolute toss-up,” highlighting Collins’ financial advantage but also recognizing Jackson’s enthusiasm among supporters. Having Hanna Pingree, the Democratic gubernatorial candidate, on the ticket could benefit Jackson.

National Impact and Midterm Importance

This race is crucial for Democrats aiming for a Senate majority. The path requires winning in competitive states and potentially flipping some GOP-held seats. Democrats are defending or targeting seats in several key states, including Maine, North Carolina, and Georgia.

The results in Maine could significantly influence the Senate dynamics, and both candidates are set to debate ahead of Election Day.
