Customs Officers Discover Prohibited Goods in Luggage from Thailand

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) uncovered nearly 100 pounds of prohibited goods inside luggage arriving from Thailand. The discovery included meat, plants, and wildlife products, thanks to CBP agriculture detector dog Maisy.

Maisy alerted officials to a suitcase containing 50 pounds of meat, raw meat included, 33 pounds of mangoes, garlic, bamboo, banana plants, and 16 pounds of Bengal monitor lizard. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service took custody of the monitor lizard.

“If you discovered all this in a suitcase, wouldn’t you be this happy?” CBP commented, sharing a photo of Maisy with the seized items.

CBP agriculture specialists are tasked with inspecting international luggage to prevent the entry of prohibited goods into the United States that might introduce pests, animal diseases, or invasive species.

Additionally, a separate incident involved the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. They inspected a vehicle at the San Ysidro Port of Entry. The inspection revealed approximately 436 fish, including rockfish, lingcod, sheephead, and yellowtail.

The vehicle’s passengers lacked valid Mexican fishing licenses, and officials determined they intended to sell the fish in the United States. The fish were seized as evidence. Charges are pending for unlawful fishing in Mexico, lacking valid licenses, and illegal fish importation into the United States.
