Mikey Watson, the shortstop for Homewood-Flossmoor, seized a chance to shine brightly on a grand stage. Playing at Rate Field, the home of the Chicago White Sox, Watson demonstrated his skills and leadership. A senior at Homewood-Flossmoor and an Illinois-Chicago recruit, Watson expressed his commitment to energizing his team. “I take pride in my game being the spark plug for the team,” Watson stated, emphasizing his desire to contribute to the East All-Stars’ victory.
During the Double Duty Classic at Rate Field in Chicago on July 22, 2026, Watson made a significant impact. He hit a leadoff triple, scoring the first run and propelling the East All-Stars to a 9-2 victory over the West. Alongside Marian Catholic’s Jazarris Mackmore, who also excelled with three hits and a two-run double, Watson secured the Minnie Minoso Award as co-MVPs of the game.
“We’ve been playing together for at least four years now and we’ve known each other since kindergarten,” Mackmore said of his connection with Watson. When speaking about Watson’s game, Mackmore added that Watson is a “goofy guy” and a hard-hitting player who excels on the field.
Watson’s performance included going 3-for-4 with two runs and two stolen bases. His triple set the tone for an influential game. “I was definitely fired up and excited about batting leadoff, especially this being my first time on a big-league field,” Watson reflected.
The game highlighted Watson’s defensive skills as well. He initiated three double plays and showcased his control and anticipation on the field. “I like to take pride in my defense,” Watson noted. “I want people to realize that I’m also a defender. I like to use my speed to save or win games and help us any way.”
Watson transferred to Homewood-Flossmoor at the beginning of his junior year, leaving Brother Rice. The transition was challenging but proved beneficial. He contributed to the Vikings’ 20-15 record by embracing a leadership role. “It was two different environments, two different cultures,” Watson recalled of his transfer experience. “Making the move to H-F, making it my team, allowing me to be the leader, I think it really helped me find my voice.”
Watson’s game is built on speed and rhythm. As the leadoff hitter for H-F, he aimed to exploit every chance to pressure defenses. “I like to put pressure on defenses and force them to make plays,” Watson explained, highlighting his approach to the game.
Baseball has been central to Watson’s life since he started playing T-ball at age four in South Holland. As the oldest of three boys, he naturally assumed the role of a leader. Playing at Rate Field with friends added to the occasion’s meaningfulness. “I know a lot of these guys and sharing the field with them meant so much to me,” Watson said. “They’re like my family and I love playing with them.”
