Strait of Hormuz Shipping Update

The number of ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz has decreased. Only eight vessels were tracked on Tuesday, marking a one-week low. This data, reported by Reuters, highlights the effects of ongoing conflict in the region. Before the war began on February 28, about 130 ships transited the waterway daily.

The drop in transit reflects a decline from the 10-day average of 12 ships and is the lowest daily count since August 5, as per Kpler data reported by Reuters.

Escalation in Red Sea: Houthi Attacks

Houthi rebels in Yemen have escalated their conflict against the Yemeni government. On Tuesday, they attacked a vessel in the Red Sea, killing six people. The attack took place in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and is the first known death from Houthi assaults on ships since the latest fighting began.

These strikes are part of broader attacks by the Houthis, targeting government positions and oil facilities in Yemen and Saudi Arabia. The violence threatens to renew Yemen’s civil war, which had seen a truce in 2022. Mohammed Abdul-Salam, the Houthi spokesperson, accused Saudi Arabia of tightening a blockade and called for lifting it as a condition for further negotiations.

U.S. Military Actions in the Gulf of Oman

The U.S. military intervened against a Panama-flagged cargo ship that tried to circumvent the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports. U.S. Central Command reported that an American helicopter disabled the Vela Nova vessel with Hellfire missiles after it ignored multiple warnings. The incident occurred in the Gulf of Oman.

CENTCOM stated that the ship was no longer attempting to transit to Iran following the attack. Since starting the blockade, the U.S. military has disabled three non-compliant ships, boarded two, and redirected 55 commercial vessels attempting to breach the blockade.
