Controversy Surrounds Ye’s Concert Plans Amid Criticism

The mayor of San Antonio has expressed support for canceling Ye’s upcoming Fourth of July concert in the city. This follows the cancellation of several of his shows in Europe due to protests over his antisemitic conduct.

Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones stated on social media that San Antonio should not host Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, in a city-funded venue like the Alamodome, especially on such a significant date as July 4th. She emphasized the importance of standing against antisemitism as a measure towards national unity.

Ye’s representatives have not commented on the situation. His concert at the Alamodome is part of a tour for his new album titled “Bully.” Ye’s history of antisemitic behavior includes releasing a controversial song and selling merchandise with offensive symbols.

Following backlash, Ye apologized in 2023, then later retracted his apology in 2025. In a recent gesture, he published a full-page ad in The Wall Street Journal, expressing remorse and citing untreated bipolar disorder as a factor in his actions.

European authorities have been dismissive of Ye’s latest apology. Italian officials canceled his concert set for July due to security issues and concerns from Jewish leaders. Similarly, the British government denied Ye entry for performances, and events in Poland and Switzerland were canceled due to his antisemitic history. Ye voluntarily canceled a show in France after potential intervention by the country’s interior ministry.

Despite the controversy, Ye successfully performed for a large crowd in the Netherlands, with attendees focusing more on his music than his previous actions. Earlier, he had sold-out performances at SoFi Stadium near Los Angeles.

Ye’s summer tour includes scheduled concerts in Spain, Portugal, Albania, and Chicago later this year. He is also set to perform in Tampa, Fla., at Raymond James Stadium. Florida Senator Rick Scott has voiced concerns about these events, urging local officials to reevaluate hosting Ye due to the use of taxpayer money for the venue.
