Controversy Surrounds Inglewood Mayor Amid Allegations

Inglewood Mayor Faces Misconduct Allegations

Inglewood is currently experiencing turmoil due to recent allegations against its mayor, James T. Butts Jr. Accusations of inappropriate behavior at a community event have surfaced, which Butts strongly refutes as politically motivated.

Mayor Denies Allegations

On Monday, Mayor Butts hosted a press conference where the allegations were addressed publicly for the first time. Standing outside Inglewood City Hall with supporters, he alleged the accusations are linked to political conflicts involving the city and local entertainment venue operators. The event reportedly involved a high school student at the city’s “Votechella,” but clarity about the incident is scarce.

The involved student and her family have remained silent, reportedly following legal advice to not engage with the media while investigations proceed.

Accusations Spur Divisive Response

Butts expressed that the claims are part of a smear campaign, emphasizing there is no formal complaint from the alleged victim. He criticized his rivals for promoting what he called a racist narrative. He did not address further questions after his statement.

Political activists first brought the accusations into the public eye last Thursday, conducting their own press conference. Though none claimed direct witness to any misconduct, several attendees of Votechella described seeing the student uncomfortable.

A local activist stated, “It’s our duty to believe minors who report inappropriate contact, demanding accountability.”

Mayor Butts announced intentions to challenge activists legally for spreading what he considers baseless slander. Some activists also have political ambitions, being involved in local council campaigns.

Political Tensions and Ongoing Developments

Some tension also revolves around a ballot measure known as Measure BB, supported by venues such as SoFi Stadium. This measure would impact city revenue from advertising, a point of contention for Butts.

Mayor Butts has gained prominence through the city’s recent successes in sports and entertainment ventures, highlighted by the presence of major football teams and basketball franchises relocating to Inglewood.

State Assemblymember Tina McKinnor spoke at the Mayor’s conference, advocating for responsible handling of allegations during election periods. She noted the absence of formal reports filed by the school or family, leaving questions unanswered.

Rick Olivarez, City Attorney, confirmed the lack of complaints received by his office. The local school district has maintained a commitment to student safety amidst these claims, though investigation details remain opaque.

Efforts are underway by activists to initiate legal inquiries. A request was made to the district attorney’s office concerning the alleged incident, motivated by witness accounts.

Mayor Butts has faced previous legal challenges with claims involving conduct and financial matters struck down by courts.
