Wisconsin state Rep. Francesca Hong, a prominent figure in the Democratic gubernatorial primary, is under scrutiny for her past social media posts that criticize some major American holidays. As a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, Hong expressed strong opinions about Thanksgiving, Valentine’s Day, and other celebrations.

In a post from November 2020, Hong called for the cancellation of Thanksgiving, arguing that the holiday celebrates colonialism and the events that led to the death of Indigenous people. After facing backlash, Hong described Thanksgiving as her “favorite holiday.” Her past remarks, however, continue to attract criticism.

Hong’s critique isn’t limited to Thanksgiving. On Valentine’s Day 2022, she expressed disdain for the holiday, noting that it exemplifies capitalism’s influence on expressions of love. She suggested that the day brings out negative behavior in people.

“I miss working in a restaurant every day…except on VDay,” Hong remarked, highlighting her negative view of Valentine’s Day.

Hong’s comments extend to Halloween as well. In 2019, she stated her preference for not working during the Halloween weekend and expressed a desire to ask people in costumes to leave. Over the years, she has consistently voiced her disinterest in Halloween.

Conservative and liberal commentators have likened Hong to the Grinch, implying she disapproves of holidays. An anonymous user accused her of “grinchmaxxing.”

Hong’s disapproval also extends to celebrations involving fireworks. She questioned the lack of a curfew on fireworks during a post in 2020, and in 2019, she expressed her dissatisfaction with fireworks displays.

Steve Guest, a Republican commentator, suggested that Hong’s critique of traditional celebrations might alienate voters. He noted her posts could be seen as an attack on established institutions.

Despite claims that Hong dislikes Christmas, her social media history reveals posts celebrating the holiday. While sometimes feeling “slightly attacked” by Christmas-related changes, she does not show an outright dislike for the holiday.

The debate over Hong’s views on holidays is part of a larger discussion about how traditional holidays are perceived politically. Though conservatives often accuse Democrats of waging a “war on Christmas,” liberals contest this claim.

Some individuals find Hong’s views refreshing. Las Vegas DSA member Val Thomason, for example, finds her character appealing despite her unpopular opinions on holidays.

The Hong campaign has not responded to requests for comment on this matter.
