The upcoming congressional primary in Tennessee’s 5th District will test former President Donald Trump’s political influence. Voters will choose between Trump-endorsed Rep. Andy Ogles and Republican Charlie Hatcher, who recently secured support from Governor Bill Lee.
Ogles is a prominent ally of Trump and is pursuing his third term in representing Middle Tennessee. The district includes parts of the Nashville suburbs. Hatcher previously held the position of Agriculture Commissioner under Governor Lee and served as Tennessee State Veterinarian under both Democratic and Republican administrations. Regarding Lee’s endorsement of his opponent, Ogles commented, “I’m not really surprised at all. You know, they’re friends.”
Ogles has gathered endorsements from key figures such as Trump and House GOP leaders. He stated, “The golden endorsement that anyone wants is that of President Trump’s, which I have. And I think Trump has done a good job of ensuring he’s choosing conservatives in races.” He also highlighted endorsements from Mike Johnson and Jim Jordan.
While Trump’s endorsement offers a significant advantage in Tennessee, where he triumphed by 18 points in the 2024 elections, Ogles is contending with significant opposition. A clean energy super PAC, led by billionaire Chris Larsen, has spent over $1 million against him.
Ogles, a member of the House Freedom Caucus, has maintained a reputation distinct from others in the group who often challenge GOP leadership. He has worked closely with Mike Johnson on legislative matters, boosting his influence and earning Johnson’s support. Johnson emphasized Ogles’ role as a key negotiator on significant bills, saying that Ogles is crucial in maintaining a Republican majority in the House.
Governor Lee released a video this week endorsing Hatcher, emphasizing their long-standing friendship and Hatcher’s consistent support for Trump. Hatcher responded on Facebook, pledging to pursue “sensible, problem-solving solutions” in Congress and support conservative values.
Despite Lee’s reference to Trump in his endorsement of Hatcher, their past divergence is well documented. In 2024, Trump supported Bobby Harshbarger for a state Senate seat over a Lee-backed incumbent, with Harshbarger ultimately winning. Trump remarked on Lee in critical terms following that race.
The ongoing primary race presents a significant test of both Trump’s and Lee’s influence within their party.
