Officials expressed anger online after a Senate committee disclosed text messages on Monday, revealing Dr. Anthony Fauci’s private discussion about a theoretical concern. The concern was that fever and other reactions following a second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine might be linked to miscarriage during the first trimester.
In January 2021, a conversation obtained from Fauci’s government-issued cellphone showed the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) discussing worries about symptoms after a second vaccine dose. Fauci wrote that the reaction “theoretically could be associated with miscarriage in the 1st trimester.”
Senators Rand Paul and Ron Johnson made the conversation public, with Sen. Paul accusing Fauci of saying one thing in public and another in private. Paul claimed that Fauci minimized vaccine risks to pregnant women instead of admitting mistakes regarding the vaccine. He stated on social media that Fauci risked women’s and their unborn children’s health by not acknowledging his alleged errors regarding the vaccines.
“Once again, Anthony Fauci was saying one thing in public and something completely different in private,” Paul expressed on X.
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier also criticized Fauci, accusing him of hiding information that could have endangered pregnant women and their unborn babies. Uthmeier posted on X questioning how many women miscarried due to Fauci’s purported misinformation and accused Fauci of lying.
Former Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene went further, demanding Fauci’s arrest, branding the issue “the most infuriating thing.” She argued that Fauci was aware that COVID vaccines could cause miscarriages, yet he continued to promote them. Greene insisted that Fauci should face legal consequences.
“Fauci knew Covid shots cause miscarriages. And still forced the shots. Fauci belongs in prison,” Greene declared on X.
Uthmeier reiterated his concerns, questioning whether Fauci’s guidance might have contributed to miscarriages: “If a Covid vaccine can kill a baby and cause a miscarriage, then imagine all the other things it can do to you. And Fauci knew it and still told people to take it,” he maintained in another post.
Senator Johnson’s press release stated that the revelations could significantly impact public health and emphasize the importance of informed consent. Meanwhile, Fauci had previously acknowledged there were “no data or theoretical reason” to suggest vaccination earlier in pregnancy was preferable to later stages. He also noted over 10,000 pregnant women had been vaccinated without issues reported.
A conversation involving Dr. Vivek Murthy, referring to the World Health Organization’s recommendation against Moderna’s vaccine for pregnant women due to limited data, was also highlighted. Murthy suggested a strong recommendation against vaccination could damage public confidence among pregnant women.
