DiJonai Carrington from the Chicago Sky faced ejection on Saturday after a Flagrant 2 foul on Indiana Fever’s Sophie Cunningham. Carrington later expressed her frustration by posting ‘WHITE PRIVILEGE’ on social media and tagging the Fever.

The incident occurred during the first quarter when Cunningham, who is white, attempted a fast-break layup. Carrington, who is Black, hit Cunningham in the head and neck, causing her to fall as the shot was completed. Cunningham quickly rose and confronted Carrington, though teammates restrained her.

The officials reviewed the play and escalated the foul to Flagrant 2 after determining there was windup, impact, and follow-through. The game concluded with Indiana defeating Chicago 90-86.

Later in the game, Indiana’s Caitlin Clark received a technical foul in the third quarter for contacting a referee after being pushed out of bounds. This marked her eighth technical of the season, resulting in a one-game suspension for the Fever’s next game. Clark described the contact as unintentional and hoped the WNBA would consider reversing the foul.

“She said I ran into her,” Clark stated regarding the referee. “I watched it on tape. We’ll see what the league decides. It was unintentional, so I hope it gets rescinded. Nothing was exchanged verbally.”

Fever coach Stephanie White criticized the call as ‘bad.’

Cunningham has been an advocate for Clark in response to aggressive play and has garnered significant attention in the league. Recently, Cunningham voiced support for excluding transgender girls and women from girls’ and women’s sports, prompting protests at Fever games in Seattle and Portland.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced further discussions on transgender participation in women’s basketball would continue.
