Statewide Manhunt for Thomas David Ryan
Authorities in New York have launched a statewide search for 32-year-old Thomas David Ryan, wanted in connection with the death of his 70-year-old father and a house fire. The New York State Police have labeled Ryan as armed and dangerous, advising the public not to approach him.
Incident Details
State troopers responded to a house fire on Greenville Turnpike in Greenville at about 7:30 p.m. on August 6. They found Robert Ryan, 70, deceased inside after firefighters put out the blaze. Investigators concluded the fire was set deliberately to conceal the crime, prompting a homicide investigation.
Greenville, a rural area approximately 65 miles northwest of New York City, has seen heightened law enforcement patrols since the incident. These patrols cover Greenville and neighboring areas in Orange, Sullivan, and Ulster counties.
Community Assistance Requested
Investigators are asking residents and local businesses to check surveillance footage from 6 p.m. on August 6 through the night. “The community’s assistance is critical,” state police emphasized. Even minimal details could be vital in safely locating Ryan and concluding the investigation.
“He had his first break at 16, hospitalization programs are only covered so long, medications can only be encouraged until 18, and then you can make your own decisions, and if you know anything about schizophrenia, schizophrenia will tell you you’re fine,” said Stephanie Coiro, Ryan’s sister.
Who Is Thomas David Ryan?
Ryan is described as 6-foot-2 and weighing around 200 pounds. Witnesses last saw him in a black T-shirt and black sweatpants. Though he did not reside with his father, Ryan has a history of transient living in state shelters and connections to the Plattsburgh area near the Canadian border. He is on probation until April 2028 and has seven prior arrests in New York City.
Sister’s Statement on Mental Health
Ryan’s sister, Stephanie Coiro, said he struggled with severe mental illness for years. Their father had recently brought him to the Greenville home just hours before the incident after a call for help.
Authorities’ Instructions
Authorities believe Ryan may be driving a gray 2016 Toyota Prius, New York license plate HNH-7671, or traveling by train. They are coordinating with rail transportation partners. Police urge anyone who sees Ryan to call 911 immediately or contact the State Police Middletown Bureau of Criminal Investigation at 845-344-5300.
