Controversy Arises in Texas Congressional Race Amid Veterans’ Condemnation of Political Ads

The Texas congressional race in the 35th District has encountered new controversy as political ads targeting a veteran have drawn strong criticism. These ads, sent just before Memorial Day, have been accused of mocking Carlos De La Cruz, a veteran endorsed by former President Donald Trump.

John Lujan and Carlos De La Cruz, both Republicans, are engaged in a primary runoff election. A political action committee supporting Lujan sent out ads labeling De La Cruz as the “100% disabled” kickboxer, insinuating he falsely claims full disability to avoid property taxes. De La Cruz, an Air Force veteran, served in Iraq and Afghanistan and owns a kickboxing gym.

Charlotte Neiner, a fellow Air Force veteran, was appalled by the political mailer. She stated, “This is the most shameful thing I have ever pulled out of my mailbox.” Neiner criticized the timing of the ad and declared that it is disrespectful to veterans, especially on the brink of Memorial Day.

Neiner emphasized her disdain for Lujan’s campaign tactics, expressing that a person with such “little honor” should not be in Congress. She pledged support for De La Cruz and vowed to inform other veterans of the incident.

Texas law grants veterans who are 100% disabled—or individually unemployable—a property tax exemption on their primary residence. Approximately 164,000 veterans in Texas benefit from this exemption based on 2024 data from advocates.

The Lujan campaign did not respond to requests for comment. Meanwhile, De La Cruz’s gym presence is noted, underscoring his activity despite being categorized as disabled.

In the initial election round, Lujan led with 32% of the vote, followed by De La Cruz with 27%. High-profile endorsements include De La Cruz with Donald Trump’s backing and Lujan with Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott’s support.

The controversy extends to the Democratic primary in the same district where Maureen Galindo’s anti-Zionist remarks have sparked national attention.
