Clemson Faces Tough Decisions After Loss to LSU

After a 7-6 finish in the previous season, expectations were high for Dabo Swinney and the Clemson Tigers. With talented receivers such as T.J. Moore and Bryant Wesco Jr., coupled with key transfers like Chris Johnson Jr., Elliot Washington II, and London Merritt, the team hoped for an improved performance. They also brought in the 20th-ranked recruiting class. Despite these efforts, Clemson could not close the gap against LSU on Saturday night.

In Lane Kiffin’s debut as LSU’s head coach, his team dominated Clemson, winning 51-10. Clemson managed only 145 total yards of offense, adding pressure on Swinney. Last season’s disappointment had already put him under scrutiny, and this defeat intensified the calls for change.

A potential solution exists for Clemson if decisive action is taken. CBS Sports’ Robby Kalland reported that firing Swinney during the 2026 season could save the school $3 million. His current buyout stands at $57 million, but it will increase to $60 million with total compensation in 2027. This year is the final in a declining buyout structure.

Swinney remains a significant figure in Clemson football history, credited with two national championships. The thought of his dismissal surprises many, considering his accolades. He has three Paul “Bear” Bryant Awards, nine ACC championships, and an overall record of 187-54, giving him a winning percentage of .776, one of the highest in college football history.

Despite his achievements, the sport is unforgiving. More losses could make the decision to buy out his contract more pressing. Clemson’s upcoming schedule includes a game against Georgia Southern, a challenging matchup against ACC opponent UNC, then games with Cal, Miami, Charleston Southern, Virginia Tech, and Florida State, all scheduled before November begins.
