Chiefs coach Andy Reid announced that quarterback Patrick Mahomes is unlikely to play in the preseason opener against the Rams. Reid also mentioned the possibility of Mahomes skipping all three exhibition games. This decision comes after Mahomes had surgery in December to repair torn ligaments in his left knee.
Despite his injury, Mahomes has progressed well in rehabilitation. He participated fully in the offseason program and reported to training camp as scheduled. Last month, Dr. Dan Cooper, the surgeon from Dallas who performed Mahomes’ surgery, approved him for unrestricted practice participation.
There’s a pretty good chance I don’t play him,Reid said.Percentages are leaning that way. I don’t know if I will play him the second or third game, but percentages probably lean against doing that.
Mahomes, a two-time MVP, does not necessarily need the preseason experience due to his extensive career. However, his competitive spirit might persuade Reid to let him have a few snaps in the second game against Tampa Bay. Mahomes expressed eagerness to take his first real hit, which he believes will signify his return to full football action.
The Chiefs have other quarterbacks needing preseason reps. They acquired veteran Justin Fields from the Jets as a primary backup who requires time to adjust to the new offense. Additionally, Garrett Nussmeier, a former LSU quarterback picked in the seventh round, needs developmental playing time.
We’ve got new people … behind (Mahomes) that need some work,
Reid said. The more reps they get, the better.
Reid also addressed player injuries, noting none are serious. Offensive guard Trey Smith consulted a hip specialist due to discomfort, but Reid anticipates he’ll be fine. Other injured players include defensive end Ashton Gillotte with a hamstring strain, linebackers Jeffrey Bassa and Drue Tranquill managing groin and back problems, respectively, and cornerbacks L’Jarius Sneed and Mansoor Delane addressing knee and shoulder issues. Wide receiver Xavier Worthy also deals with a shoulder injury.
Wide receiver Cyrus Allen returned to practice after suffering a shin bruise. While Allen avoided contact drills, Reid commended his positive performance and focus. Allen remains committed, attending all meetings and eager to resume full participation.
