Canadian Fans Boo U.S. Anthem Amid Escalating Trade Tensions

Recent incidents at Major League Soccer (MLS) games in Canada have highlighted a growing frustration towards the United States. Fans in Vancouver and Montreal were heard booing “The Star-Spangled Banner” during matches, reflecting tensions that have intensified following the breakdown of trade talks between the two countries.

The occurrences took place at the Vancouver Whitecaps vs. FC Dallas and CF Montréal vs. Los Angeles Galaxy matches. A video of the crowd in Montreal booing was shared on social media, sparking further discussion about the incident.

Trade War Kicks Off Again

The booing incidents followed the collapse of trade negotiations last week. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney criticized the last-minute changes imposed by the United States as “unfair” and “uneconomic.” The U.S. described the breakdown as a “missed opportunity” for Canada.

The United States has since applied 50 percent tariffs on various Canadian goods, including motor vehicles and dairy, affecting products worth approximately $20 billion. In response, Carney has promised reciprocal tariffs.

Carney stated, “For over a year, Canada has worked intensively and in good faith with the United States to negotiate a new comprehensive trade deal… We have pursued every opportunity to reach an agreement that protects Canadian workers and their families.”

Starting September 8, Canada’s retaliatory measures will affect several U.S. industries, such as steel and electronics.

Meanwhile, President Trump expressed plans to broaden U.S. tariffs, targeting cars, trucks, and automotive parts, accusing Canada of exploiting the U.S. for years.

Trade Dispute Spreads to Cultural Rift

Since Trump returned to office in January 2025, U.S. and Canada relations have become increasingly strained. Despite strong military ties and significant trade, tariff disputes and Trump’s remarks about Canada have fueled growing resentment.

Alongside Ottawa’s retaliatory tariffs, several Canadian provinces prohibit the sale of U.S. alcohol. Boycotts of American products are also widespread.

This marks another period of heightened tension, similar to early in Trump’s second term when Canadian sports fans also booed the U.S. anthem. A recent poll from the Angus Reid Institute showed 48 percent of Canadians have an “unfavorable” view of Americans, compared to the 45 percent who view them favorably. Meanwhile, 79 percent of Americans hold a favorable view of Canadians.
