An altercation unraveled during Cleveland Browns’ practice session on Saturday between pass rusher Jared Verse and rookie offensive tackle Spencer Fano. Zac Jackson from The Athletic reported that Verse ‘threw multiple punches’ as the two players were entangled on the ground, necessitating intervention by teammates. Despite the intense scuffle, both players resumed participation in the next play.
Spencer Fano, selected as the No. 9 overall pick by the Browns out of Utah in the 2026 NFL Draft, was highly anticipated as one of this year’s top tackle prospects. After the incident, Fano received applause from fans when he effectively countered Verse’s advances in pass protection during the subsequent play.
This marks the second reported altercation for the Browns since the onset of their training camp, with another scuffle occurring on August 1 involving multiple team members. Verse, aged 25, arrived at the Browns as part of a significant trade that sent Myles Garrett, the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year, to the Los Angeles Rams.
Recently, Chris Easterling of the Akron Beacon Journal highlighted the mentoring role Verse has embraced with Fano since his camp arrival. Fano expressed appreciation for Verse’s guidance, stating, “He’s so good at coaching me up… He’d point out oversets and help me correct mistakes,” during a previous camp session.
The Browns are facing an eventful season following their disappointing 5-12 record last year, with aspirations of improvement facing numerous challenges. Aside from recent on-field conflicts, the team must resolve a quarterback battle between Shedeur Sanders, last season’s endgame starter, and veteran Deshaun Watson, who is returning from injury.
The offensive line relies heavily on Fano’s performance to ensure frontline protection. Verse’s role as a major asset is crucial following the team’s separation from Garrett, a longtime defensive linchpin.
