The province of British Columbia, Canada, has declared a state of emergency due to a fast-moving wildfire that has ravaged homes, trapped residents, and forced the evacuation of over 20,000 people near Okanagan Lake. Premier David Eby announced the emergency as more than 100 wildfires burn across the province, with nearly half uncontrollable due to hot, windy conditions and prolonged drought.
Mass Evacuations and Community Impact
The entire community of Summerland, housing around 12,000 residents, and roughly 8,000 people from around Peachland, were evacuated overnight. Officials have yet to confirm the number of homes destroyed. Eby highlighted the distress many families face, stating, “Many people have lost their homes. Others are still waiting for news about their loved ones.”
Cliff Chapman, director of wildfire operations for the BC Wildfire Service, noted that firefighting helicopters were diverted to perform rescues. He emphasized that cooperation among responding agencies prevented a worse outcome.
Explosive Wildfire Conditions
The Bald Range wildfire, reported on Friday evening, rapidly expanded to cover 50 square kilometers (19 square miles) within hours. It quickly overwhelmed the small community of Faulder and reached Summerland, covering 15 kilometers (9 miles) with alarming speed.
Chapman described the wildfire conditions across British Columbia as “explosive,” warning that other communities could face similar threats. Emergency Management Minister Kelly Greene stated that the state of emergency grants the province additional powers, such as restricting travel and securing evacuee accommodations.
Personal Accounts and Emergency Response
Erick Thompson, an emergency official with the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen, remarked on the unprecedented speed and growth of the wildfire. Thompson had to evacuate his own family, stressing the urgency of the situation.
“I had to leave the EOC to get my family out. We’re heading south,”
he said in a video, showing traffic congestion as drivers attempted to flee.
Videos circulating on social media displayed numerous homes engulfed in flames, with residents escaping as fires bordered both sides of the roads.
Homeowner Kerry Gold and her husband, Mike Elsinga, evacuated in the early hours, witnessing the rapid advance of the flames. The couple, prepared to assist a disabled friend, faced the difficult decision of abandoning their property. Gold expressed anxiety about the pace of the fire, while Elsinga commented on their dilemma, saying they didn’t want to be caught in the blaze.
