Brandon Aiyuk’s Uncertain Future with the San Francisco 49ers

The relationship between Brandon Aiyuk and the San Francisco 49ers appears to be nearing its end. General Manager John Lynch has indicated it is ‘safe to say’ that Aiyuk’s tenure with the team is concluding. The tension stems from a dispute over guaranteed money that was voided from Aiyuk’s contract after he did not participate in rehabilitation sessions for significant knee injuries sustained in the 2024 season.

Despite efforts to find a trade partner for Aiyuk, the 49ers have yet to finalize any deals. Tight end George Kittle has expressed his sentiments, wishing ‘luck’ to whichever team acquires Aiyuk. Kittle recalled Aiyuk’s impressive training sessions, noting his speed and agility, though he acknowledged that those observations were made several months ago.

“I used to go out early in the morning before meetings to watch him train. He’d always be out there early, running over 22 miles an hour and stopping on a dime.” – George Kittle

The Washington Commanders have been mentioned as a potential destination for Aiyuk. Aiyuk himself fueled speculation by actively cheering for the Commanders in a video on his Instagram Story. He also criticized the 49ers for extending his contract and suggested they feared his performance with another team.

Aiyuk’s frustration with the 49ers was further evidenced when he was placed on the reserve/left team list in December. In the 2024 season before his injury, Aiyuk recorded 24 catches for 374 yards. In the prior 2023 season, he achieved over 1,300 yards in receptions, contributing to the team’s Super Bowl appearance.
