Austin Shelter-in-Place Order Lifted After Shooting Suspects Captured

Authorities have lifted a shelter-in-place order for parts of south Austin, Texas. This decision follows the capture of two suspects linked to a series of random shootings. These incidents occurred from late Saturday into Sunday.

“The shelter in place for the south Austin area has been lifted, and two suspects are in custody,” an Austin police update on social media stated. However, one suspect remains at large in the Manor area. Further information will be provided as it becomes available.

Incidents Overview

Mayor Kirk Watson mentioned during a press briefing that multiple shootings were reported across the area. This included shootings at two fire stations. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis commented that the shootings seem random and a motive has yet to be determined.

A final update was provided by Austin PD around 7 p.m. local time. Mayor Watson expressed gratitude for everyone involved in the investigation, passing the floor to Chief Davis. Davis reported both suspects are now in custody. One suspect had an outstanding warrant for stealing a gun from the same store his accomplice had previously targeted. Additionally, a vehicle theft occurred prior to the gun theft.

The department received 20 service calls about the suspects, who fired at apartment buildings and fire stations, damaging a fire truck. They stole four vehicles during their spree. Watson and Davis thanked the public for adhering to alert notices and asked for any additional information regarding Sunday’s events.

Details on the Suspects

While the identities of the two suspects remain unreleased, authorities are still searching for a third person. Earlier reports described two Hispanic males in their late teens, one with medium wavy hair and the other with longer hair. It is unclear which suspects have been detained.

Authorities shared information on three vehicles potentially linked to the shootings: a black Honda Accord, a gold Honda, and a white Nissan Altima. Mayor Watson noted the suspects seemed to switch vehicles during the incidents.

Information on the Victims

Four individuals were shot, with one person sustaining life-threatening injuries. The other three suffered non-life-threatening wounds. Additional details about the victims are not yet available, including whether any were fire station employees.

Areas Affected

The initial shelter-in-place order encompassed a large section of south Austin, stretching from Skyline Park to Dick Nicholas District Park. Although the order for south Austin has been lifted, those in the Manor area should remain vigilant as the search for the remaining suspect continues.

Resident Guidelines

Chief Davis urged residents to contact 911 immediately if they observe anything suspicious. The public is advised not to approach any of the suspected vehicles.

Residents should secure personal vehicles by removing keys or key fobs. Davis noted that several vehicles have been stolen during the crime spree.

The investigation remains active and ongoing; more updates will be provided as developments arise.
