Hasan Piker, a Twitch streamer with influence in the Democratic Party, addressed his support for Hamas during a CNN interview. Piker is known for his controversial statements, which were highlighted in an episode of “The Whole Story With Anderson Cooper.” He discussed these remarks with reporter Donie O’Sullivan.
In the interview, Piker responded to a House resolution condemning his rhetoric that some said aligned with Hamas. “Well, I wouldn’t say I express support for all of Hamas’s actions or anything,” Piker stated. He acknowledged the Palestinian right to resist but admitted Hamas sometimes violates this with war crimes.
The House resolution referenced Piker’s previous remarks comparing Hamas favorably to Israel. He described himself as a “harm-reduction voter,” indicating he would choose Hamas over Israel in his view of them as a paramilitary organization formed by orphaned children affected by the conflict.
Piker addressed accusations regarding his stance on Hamas’s policies towards women and LGBTQ rights. “It’s not an endorsement of their domestic policies,” he clarified. Piker emphasized what he sees as the greater issue facing Palestinians: the Israeli occupation.
“The Israeli occupation is the greatest problem that they’re facing, the most existential problem that they’re facing,” Piker asserted.
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) condemned Piker’s comments, noting his large following and the lack of response from Democratic officials. An ADL spokesperson stated, “That silence has a cost,” stressing the need for officials to reject such rhetoric.
The American Jewish Committee (AJC) also criticized Piker’s remarks on “Pod Save America,” arguing that supporting a terrorist organization crosses a significant line. They called on leaders in politics, media, and civil society to be cautious about the voices they amplify.
Piker, self-described as a socialist streamer, campaigned with several Democratic socialists nationwide, but his comments have drawn criticism. For example, he stated “America deserved 9/11” in 2019. Recently, Democratic strategist James Carville voiced opposition to Piker’s influence within the party.
Carville remarked to Fox News, “I can’t sit here and tell you for certain how this is going to turn out, but the one thing I can tell you for certain, Hasan Piker and James Carville are not going to be in the same political party.” He noted that many Democrats likely share his viewpoint.
