Atlanta Falcons Name Quarterback Amid Injury Concerns

The Atlanta Falcons have named Tua Tagovailoa as their starting quarterback for Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. This decision comes after Tagovailoa battled Michael Penix Jr. for the position. Penix has only recently returned to full practice following a torn ACL, making the decision less surprising.

However, Tagovailoa’s status for Sunday’s game changed on Friday. He missed practice due to an oblique injury that occurred during Thursday’s session, casting doubt on his availability just 48 hours before the game. Later, NFL insider Ian Rapoport confirmed that Tagovailoa is officially ruled out for the Steelers game.

Michael Penix Jr., who disappointed last season after replacing Kirk Cousins, has been ruled out for Week 1 as well. Tagovailoa’s preseason performance was underwhelming. In two appearances, he completed 10 out of 13 passes for 117 yards without any touchdowns or interceptions. This performance has not instilled confidence as the regular season approaches, especially since he was outperformed by Cooper Rush and undrafted rookie Jack Strand.

With Penix unavailable and Tagovailoa injured, Cooper Rush will start as quarterback, while Jack Strand will serve as backup. Oblique strains can heal in one to three weeks if minor, but may take longer if serious. Even if Tagovailoa misses only one game, this poses a challenge for him. Fans were already skeptical of his role as a starter, making them more likely to consider other quarterback options.
