Deshaun Watson faced a critical test Sunday in proving his worth to the Cleveland Browns. Despite the franchise’s $230 million commitment to him, Watson and the team fell 34-10 to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Completing 16 of 22 passes for 205 yards, he scored one touchdown but also threw an interception and lost a fumble. Although some NFL players had worse performances, Cleveland’s offense struggled throughout the game. Watson, a controversial figure, needed this opportunity to shine, but the performance was underwhelming.
According to Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports, Browns head coach Todd Monken intends to maintain Watson as the starter for a significant period. “On my visit to Browns training camp, multiple people told me first-year coach Todd Monken planned to give Watson a long leash,” Vacchiano reported. Watson is expected to remain the starting quarterback at least through October.
This decision disappoints many Browns fans, especially following Watson’s recent comments criticizing them. After Cleveland’s preseason loss to the Bills, Watson referred to fans as “disrespectful” and “personal.” Given his off-field controversies, Watson cannot afford any more poor performances in the eyes of fans.
There is speculation that the Browns may eventually consider Shedeur Sanders as an alternative. The timeline for such a change depends on Watson’s performance. If the Browns manage to secure wins, fans might overlook Watson’s challenges. However, despite the head coach’s confidence, fans perceive Watson to be on a short leash.
