Arizona State University is investigating a challenging workout that incapacitated hockey player Matthew Mayich. Mayich’s family attorney, Rob Carey, spoke on ‘Fox & Friends First’ to demand accountability from athletic officials regarding the incident.
A group of seven Sun Devils hockey players have sent a letter to ASU’s president requesting the suspension of their head coach, Greg Powers, and his staff. This request comes after a workout left Mayich on life support and in a coma in August. These players have chosen to stay anonymous, fearing retaliation from Powers, and have expressed concerns in a detailed 26-page letter.
Disputing ASU’s initial review of the incident, the players highlighted shortcomings in hydration and medical attention for Mayich. The review indicated Mayich didn’t receive proper medical care after collapsing. Players argue that hydration was insufficient, contradicting the university’s findings.
The workout, led by a former U.S. Army Green Beret, reportedly provided a water break 20 minutes in as per ASU’s review. However, players claim the break occurred after 40 minutes of exercise, lasting only seconds. Only eight players could hydrate because they finished a drill first.
The players noted that the Green Beret admitted to neglecting hydration needs, referencing combat experiences where water breaks weren’t common. They described Mayich’s distress and inability to complete tasks during exercises, highlighting a bear crawl where he became disoriented.
The university’s report mentioned Mayich sat up twice after collapsing, contradicting the players’ account that he lay in direct sunlight for minutes before being moved to shade by teammates. His cooling options were described as inadequate, including just towels, bottled water, and a hose.
Matthew Mayich preferred spending time indoors due to Arizona’s intense heat; outdoor workouts usually lasted only 15 minutes. The players claimed Powers minimized Mayich’s condition, labeling it a minor heat stroke and suggesting it improved team prospects. This downplaying was mentioned despite the incident’s severity.
The Sun Devils are preparing for the upcoming 2026–27 season, starting against Lindenwood. Coach Powers refrained from commenting due to the challenging period for the program.
