Millions of iPhone users may qualify for a portion of Apple’s $250 million settlement over delayed AI features. However, they shouldn’t expect payments soon. A federal court has tentatively approved the agreement, but several obstacles remain before disbursements can start. This means payments are unlikely for at least another year.
Impact on Apple Customers
This settlement affects approximately 36 to 37 million Apple customers who purchased applicable iPhone models. The appeal was based on Apple’s promotion of the Apple Intelligence platform and Siri assistant improvements, which weren’t available at the product’s launch. Despite Apple not admitting to any wrongdoing, this settlement ranks among the largest consumer settlements related to AI marketing claims.
The technology sector is increasingly scrutinizing how companies advertise AI products, possibly setting the stage for future litigation.
Reasons Behind the $250 Million Payment
A class-action lawsuit claimed that Apple misled consumers by promoting advanced AI-powered Siri capabilities in the iPhone 16 series and certain iPhone 15 models before these features were ready. Court filings reveal Apple’s marketing campaign encouraged customers to buy devices based on promises of enhanced Siri features that weren’t initially available.
Although some Apple Intelligence features arrived later, the advanced Siri capabilities Apple highlighted weren’t available at launch, contributing to the disparity between marketing promises and reality.
Michael Ryan, finance expert and founder of MichaelRyanMoney.com, explained the situation further: “Apple shipped products in June 2024 promising features that only appeared almost two years later. This isn’t just about features delayed a couple of weeks.”
Apple settled the lawsuit in May, aiming to resolve claims regarding two additional features.
Settlement Delay Explained
While preliminary court approval signals progress, a final ruling is pending. Before distributing funds, class members need notification, claim submission opportunities, and time to object or opt out. Courts may require resolving appeals before issuing payments.
Consequently, eligible customers might wait over a year for their compensation.
Eligibility and Expected Payments
The settlement applies to U.S. consumers who purchased specific models between June 10, 2024, and March 29, 2025:
- Any iPhone 16 model
- iPhone 15 Pro
- iPhone 15 Pro Max
About 36 to 37 million devices could potentially qualify.
Eligible consumers may receive $25 to $95 per device, contingent on numerous factors including valid claims filed. The exact amount will be determined upon completion of the claims process.
Alex Beene, a financial literacy instructor at the University of Tennessee at Martin, commented: “As companies race to sell AI-enhanced hardware, legal and financial consequences may increase if marketing exceeds technology capabilities.”
Next Steps and Industry Implications
The settlement awaits final court approval. Once granted, eligible customers will be informed about claim submission procedures. Appeals could delay payments further.
For the tech industry, the precedence of this settlement is more significant than the monetary value. Michael Ryan pointed out, “Beyond Apple’s $250 million settlement, this precedent sets a dollar value to the gap between ‘features promised’ and ‘features functioning’.”
