Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., has publicly endorsed Angie Nixon, the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate from Florida. Nixon is competing against Republican Senator Ashley Moody in November.
“At a time when working families are fighting tooth and nail to make ends meet while the administration sells them out to corrupt special interests, we need to stand behind leaders who are accountable to working people and stand up to greedy corporations,” Ocasio-Cortez stated, according to Nixon’s campaign.
Ocasio-Cortez emphasized Nixon’s commitment to fighting for universal healthcare, childcare, and a national rent freeze. She also praised Nixon for her refusal to accept corporate PAC money, highlighting her grassroots approach to building community power.
Nixon, a serving state representative in Florida, will face Sen. Ashley Moody in a special general election. Governor Ron DeSantis previously appointed Moody to the Senate after Marco Rubio vacated the seat to become Secretary of State.
“I’m honored to have the endorsement of Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her support as we work towards a better future for Florida,” Nixon expressed, according to her campaign. “AOC is a fighter and a beacon of prioritizing people’s needs over wealthy interests. We’re committed to fighting for working families, students, and overlooked communities.”
Moody has received backing from former President Donald Trump. Recently, Trump celebrated Lt. Col. Alex Vindman’s loss to Nixon in the Democratic primary via his Truth Social post.
Trump criticized Vindman over past incidents relating to Trump’s call with President Zelenskyy of Ukraine, labeling Nixon as a radical candidate. His comments suggest confidence in Moody’s prospects in the upcoming election.
