Recent performances in baseball can dramatically alter a fan’s mood. Recently, my mood shifted due to varying outcomes of my baseball predictions. On Monday, my results were mixed, but I succeeded with my sole MLB bet on Tuesday. Although, Tuesday’s predictions were less favorable, encountering some unfortunate turns in recent games. Yesterday brought relief with an effortless 8-0 victory for the Washington Nationals. I hope for another smooth win today.
The Tampa Bay Rays consistently rank among the top teams in baseball. This success is unexpected given their lack of big-name players and typically modest budget. It’s intriguing how they maintain high performance without these advantages. Their approach seems worthy of emulation by other franchises, both large and small market. While replication of success varies, the Rays maintain consistent excellence.
Today, Ian Seymour will take the mound for the Rays. Seymour serves multiple roles, balancing between starting and relieving. This season, he made seven starts and typically pitches around five innings, conceding three runs. Seymour has already faced the Toronto Blue Jays as a reliever, allowing two earned runs over four innings. Blue Jays hitters have had success against him, with a batting average of .368 (14-for-38).
The Toronto Blue Jays have faced challenges this season. Despite high expectations following last year’s fierce competition with the Los Angeles Dodgers, they are currently ten games under .500. Discussions about trades loom, but a major overhaul seems unlikely. Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s performance stands out as a concern. He is batting .256 with only six homeruns, a decline compared to past seasons. In 2020, he hit nine homeruns in 60 games, and in 2019, 15 in 123 games.
Pitching has not been the Blue Jays’ strong suit either. They have struggled on the mound, amplifying their offensive issues. Shane Bieber will start today, holding a 1-1 record with a 5.70 ERA and a 1.73 WHIP. Once a top pitcher, Bieber still has potential at 31 years old. He has demonstrated this in recent games, with a notable six scoreless inning performance, allowing three hits, two walks, and striking out six. The Rays have hit merely .172 off Bieber this season.
Regarding the total for this game, both over and under arguments have merit. While I will not wager on the total, a few observations include Bieber’s improved home performance, albeit from a limited sample size of three starts. Only once has he not allowed a run in five games. Seymour will likely surrender runs if he faces the lineup twice. The Rays’ stronger bullpen compared to Toronto’s also merits consideration.
For the reasons highlighted, I will avoid betting on the total. Instead, I find value in backing Toronto to lead after five innings. The Blue Jays have an opportunity to challenge Seymour, and Bieber’s recent success against Rays batters favors this choice.
