Joe Theismann on Aaron Rodgers’ Return to the Steelers and Mike McCarthy’s Role

Former NFL quarterback Joe Theismann, aged 76, recently discussed the return of Aaron Rodgers to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Theismann highlighted the influence of coach Mike McCarthy as a significant factor in Rodgers’ decision to rejoin the team.

Theismann explained, “I think Aaron coming back was a no-brainer for me because Mike McCarthy’s there.” He stated that Rodgers would likely not have returned if a new system and playbook were involved. Theismann shared these thoughts in an interview with Fox News Digital.

Over 13 years with the Green Bay Packers, McCarthy and Rodgers developed a strong working relationship. This familiarity, Theismann believes, ensures a smooth transition for Rodgers, adding that the quarterback doesn’t need to learn a new system. “Aaron doesn’t have to spend a lot of time in OTA’s understanding the terminology,” Theismann stated.

Last season, Rodgers demonstrated his enduring talent, completing 65.7% of his passes for 3,322 yards over 16 games. He achieved 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions, showing he still possesses skills as a four-time NFL MVP.

Theismann, acknowledging Rodgers’ current age of 42, noted the quarterback’s reduced mobility. He emphasized the importance of the Steelers’ offensive line bolstering its performance. “He’s going to get the ball out of his hands quickly,” Theismann affirmed, stressing the need for Rodgers to have time to throw downfield.

Despite the Steelers having a new head coach after nearly two decades, Theismann expects no drastic changes in their approach. “Pittsburgh is still going to be Pittsburgh,” he stated, praising the team’s toughness in a competitive division.

Theismann, a former NFL MVP in 1983, spent his entire career with the Washington Redskins. He contributed significantly to their Super Bowl XVII victory in 1982. Through his career, he completed 56.7% of his passes, with 160 touchdowns and 138 interceptions.

Theismann will soon participate in the American Century Championship at Edgewood Golf Course in Lake Tahoe. The tournament runs from July 10-12 and will air on NBC and Peacock.
