Air Quality Alert Issued in Southern California Due to Dust

Air Quality Alert for Southern California

An air quality alert has been issued for parts of Southern California. Harmful levels of particle pollution, driven by windblown dust, are expected to impact the Imperial Valley. The Imperial County Air Pollution Control District (APCD) issued this alert, covering communities like El Centro, Calexico, Brawley, Salton City, and surrounding areas.

The alert is in effect from 3 p.m. Tuesday to 11 p.m. Wednesday. Shifting winds will likely stir up dust, degrading air quality. The particulate pollution is expected to reach unhealthy levels or worse, depending on location and weather conditions. Newsweek reached out to the Imperial County APCD for comment.

Unrelated Chemical Tank Situation in Garden Grove

This alert is unrelated to concerns about the chemical tank in Garden Grove. There, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) monitors air quality for hazardous chemicals, but no contaminants have been detected. The Imperial County warning relates only to windblown dust.

Health Risks from Particle Pollution

Particle pollution poses serious health risks. Microscopic particles can penetrate deep into the lungs, triggering asthma attacks, worsening heart and lung disease, and increasing lung infection likelihood. Certain groups face heightened risk, including older adults, children, pregnant people, and those with preexisting heart or lung conditions.

Monitoring and Responding to the Air Quality Index

Authorities advise residents to monitor the Air Quality Index (AQI) and adjust activities accordingly. For those in higher-risk categories, prolonged outdoor exertion should be limited when AQI is “unhealthy for sensitive groups.” As conditions worsen to “unhealthy” or “very unhealthy,” broader restrictions apply, and even healthy individuals should reduce outdoor activities.

Protection Measures

Residents can reduce exposure by keeping windows and doors closed, running air conditioning or air purifiers, and avoiding devices that draw in outside air. Minimize indoor pollution sources like candles, fireplaces, and gasoline-powered equipment.

Public Involvement

The APCD urges the public to limit outdoor particle pollution by reducing driving, carpooling, using public transit, and slowing down on dirt roads. Stabilizing loose soil can also help. The Imperial Valley is prone to dust events due to its arid climate and agricultural activity.

Air Quality Levels

Current air quality is considered “moderate” in much of Southern California. The AQI ranges from 51 to 100, indicating elevated pollution levels but generally acceptable for the public. Parts of California’s San Joaquin Valley, however, are considered “unhealthy for sensitive groups.”
