Actor Javier Bardem has sparked controversy by promoting a petition demanding the removal of singer Pink as a UNICEF ambassador. This move has put Bardem at the center of a dispute involving Pink, Macklemore, and the Israel-Gaza conflict.
The petition, titled ‘Remove Pink as a UNICEF Ambassador,’ urges the organization to dismiss Pink due to comments considered inconsistent with the values of peace and understanding that UNICEF promotes. Supporters of the petition argue that ambassadors should prioritize humanitarian values over personal biases.
The controversy began when Pink shared criticisms of Macklemore’s pro-Palestinian performance at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey. During the concert, Macklemore performed ‘Hind’s Hall,’ a song supporting Palestinians, which included chants of ‘Free Palestine’ alongside images related to Gaza.
“Pink chose her and her rich friends’ discomfort was more important than people’s lives,” a comment in support of Bardem’s position stated.
Bardem’s promotion of the petition drew criticism from fans and celebrities. Michael Rapaport chastised Bardem, calling him a ‘tattletale’ and urging a direct conversation with Pink rather than resorting to a petition. Selma Blair also defended Pink, commenting that removing her from UNICEF was unwarranted.
Social media users also questioned Bardem’s motivations, with some accusing him of attempting to ‘cancel’ Pink. However, there were supporters of Bardem’s action who agreed that Pink’s comments were inappropriate for a UNICEF ambassador.
Pink responded on social media, clarifying her stance on the conflict and emphasizing her Jewish heritage. She reiterated her belief that protecting innocent lives comes first and condemned Hamas as a terrorist organization, while affirming Palestinians’ right to a future of dignity.
“Of course I don’t speak for Israel, or for any government. I never have,” Pink wrote.
Macklemore, facing backlash, defended his concert appearance, stating the importance of equal treatment for all humans. He was later dropped from Ed Sheeran’s tour after several venues refused to host him.
