In East Rutherford, New Jersey, Abdul Carter, a linebacker for the New York Giants, confronted teammate Jaxson Dart after Dart introduced former President Donald Trump at a rally. Carter emphasized that this issue extends beyond football.
“He not only represents himself and what he does, but he represents all of us and that goes for anybody who wears a Giants uniform,” Carter stated. He felt compelled to publicly address Dart’s decision to align with Trump, noting its significance based on his own beliefs.
Following the event, Carter used social media to criticize Dart, although their relationship remained intact, and the posts were later removed. Carter mentioned, “We’re close. We talk. As long as we make sure we’ve got the same goal as a team and our goals align, which they do, then I feel like that’s all that matters.”
Jaxson Dart released a statement without specifically naming Trump and expressed his respect for the office of the president. He acknowledged the unique opportunity of introducing the president but did not offer an apology for his participation in the rally.
Carter maintained that he did not expect an apology from Dart. “Stand on what you believe in,” Carter said. “But it can’t be a problem when I stand on what I believe in. As long as we have that understanding, it’s all good.”
Head Coach John Harbaugh and backup quarterback Jameis Winston discussed the situation positively. Winston remarked on the significance of the relationship between Carter and Dart, highlighting their unity despite different backgrounds.
Harbaugh, who has supported Trump historically, indicated no concern about discord within the team. “I think it’s made us better, honestly,” Harbaugh said. He appreciated the open discussions among players, stressing communication rather than ignoring or dictating terms.
In other team news, receiver and return specialist Gunner Olszewski was injured during practice, suffering a noncontact leg injury. Coach Harbaugh noted the incident but expressed disappointment, awaiting further assessment.
