Lake Central Freshmen Step Up in Sectional Championship

Lake Central’s freshman pitcher, Addy Mikolanis, has made a strong impression in her debut varsity season. She has played in two games, both against Crown Point, including the Class 4A Lake Central Sectional championship. Mikolanis showed composure ahead of the big game. She said, “Being in that environment felt really good. The defense had my back, and I know my teammates support me. Even if I don’t perform well, they’re there for me.”

Mikolanis delivered an outstanding performance, pitching five scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and a walk, and striking out two. Her efforts helped Lake Central defeat the defending state champions, Crown Point, 3-1. Lake Central now holds a strong record of 27-2 and is ranked No. 1 in the state coaches poll. They will face Hobart in the regionals.

Lake Central coach Yvette Tovar trusted Mikolanis with the start. “She’s like a dark horse for us this season,” Tovar stated. Mikolanis also pitched excellently in a prior 9-0 win, reinforcing the coach’s confidence. When asked about readiness, Mikolanis confidently agreed to pitch. The coach appreciated her fearlessness, especially as a freshman.

Senior third baseman Tegan Tripp, a Virginia Tech recruit, commended Mikolanis’s confidence. “Despite being nervous, she performed with confidence, knowing the defense supported her,” Tripp said. With strong fielding behind her, Mikolanis focused on getting the infield ground balls, keeping control and composure throughout the game.

During the sectional semifinals, junior ace Maddie Such propelled Lake Central past Munster. Freshman Colbie Tressel began the game against Crown Point, allowing one run in two innings before giving way to Mikolanis. Tressel voiced gratitude for the opportunity. “Coach’s trust meant a lot, and winning was everything,” she shared.

Coach Tovar held confidence in Tressel, crediting her experience in high-level travel ball. Tovar had Such on standby, but the freshmen closed the game successfully. “Our two freshmen handled it well,” Tovar said. Mikolanis and Tressel’s strong performances were essential, with Such providing leadership from the dugout.

Such was ready to step in when needed. Tovar recounted her conversations with Such, highlighting her role as a mentor and captain to the younger pitchers. Such’s experience and guidance boosted the younger players’ confidence, preparing them for high-pressure situations. The team’s readiness and strategic decisions played a key role in their victory.
