New York State Legislators Face Financial Strain Due to Budget Delay

New York State is experiencing its most delayed budget since 2010, causing significant financial strain on legislators due to a lack of pay. Legislators are facing tough financial decisions akin to those many New Yorkers encounter daily.

Assemblywoman Emily Gallagher has felt the impacts keenly, borrowing money from family to cover her $2,750 monthly rent in Brooklyn during the legislative pay freeze. Although New York lawmakers receive $142,000 annually, the delay has halted payment to 63 senators and 150 Assembly members since April 1. This situation mirrors the financial struggles faced by many constituents living paycheck to paycheck.

“It’s bizarre to go to places and have people treating you with deference and respect — which is amazing and kind — but then to know that you actually have to ask them to buy your coffee,” Gallagher remarked.

The budget delay has forced some legislators to defer payments and borrow funds, while others seek tips on borrowing against their pensions.

The budget, expected to pass soon, will mark the latest approval in two decades. Legislators have been coping by maximizing their $200 travel per diem benefits, while their bills continue to grow.
