In the bustling streets of New Delhi, the sight of U.S. President Donald Trump on the back of auto-rickshaws is catching the attention of many. These vehicles, often used as mobile billboards, now feature the slogan, “Happy Birthday America!” alongside Trump’s image.
Approximately 100 auto-rickshaws across the Indian capital now display large visuals of Trump and the Statue of Liberty. In a city where such ads usually promote local services like fertility clinics or language courses, the American-themed images are strikingly different.

This advertising effort, introduced last month by Sergio Gor, the U.S. ambassador to India, forms part of a larger campaign celebrating the 250th anniversary of American independence. The initiative includes various events and outreach programs planned in several countries.
The U.S. Embassy promoted the project on social media, proclaiming, “Freedom is on the move … literally!” It encouraged Delhi residents to look for these unique auto-rickshaws, announcing, “Catch them if you can — they’ll be popping up all over Delhi soon.”
Amid efforts to improve U.S.-India relations, which were strained by tariff disputes under Trump’s policies, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio plans to visit New Delhi this weekend.
For many local auto-rickshaw drivers, the campaign holds limited significance. Driver Ganesh Kumar was initially reluctant to participate when approached. He changed his mind after he was offered a packet of tea as an incentive.
Another driver, Pradeep Kumar, agreed to display the poster, primarily because his vehicle’s canopy was damaged and required covering. When asked if he understood the advertisement’s message, he acknowledged recognizing Trump but confessed to knowing little else.
