Eva Marie Saint, an Oscar and Emmy-winning actress recognized as a key figure during Hollywood’s Golden Era, has passed away at the age of 102. Saint died of natural causes at her home in Los Angeles, with her family and loved ones by her side, as confirmed by her representative to Fox News Digital.
Saint’s remarkable entry into film came with her role opposite Marlon Brando in the 1954 classic “On the Waterfront.” Her performance as Edie Doyle earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
In 1959, Saint solidified her status in Hollywood history by starring alongside Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock’s “North by Northwest.” In this film, she played the enigmatic Eve Kendall.
Throughout her career of over seven decades, Saint collaborated with many of Hollywood’s leading actors, including Montgomery Clift, Henry Fonda, Paul Newman, Gregory Peck, Richard Burton, Warren Beatty, James Garner, George C. Scott, Burt Lancaster, and Tom Hanks.
Her impressive filmography includes works like “A Hatful of Rain,” “Raintree County,” “Exodus,” “The Russians Are Coming the Russians Are Coming,” “Grand Prix,” “Nothing in Common,” and later, “Superman Returns.”
Saint was not only a film star but also a significant presence on television and stage. She received five Emmy nominations, winning an Emmy in 1990 for the miniseries “People Like Us.” She had appeared on Broadway in “The Trip to Bountiful” before being cast in “On the Waterfront” by director Elia Kazan.
Born in Newark, New Jersey, and raised in Albany and Delmar, New York, Saint pursued an education at Bowling Green State University in Ohio with intentions of becoming a teacher, before finding her calling in acting.
She was married to director Jeffrey Hayden for 65 years until his passing in 2016. Saint is survived by her two children, Darrell and Laurette, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
